OK I haven't yet introduced myself on here yet so I'll do that first.

I'm 30 years old, and spent the best part of the last decade serving as an engineerin the Royal Navy, so my fitness level wasn't too bad, I did plenty of spinning classes, weights, and running, as well as playing Basketball for HMS Collingwood during my time there.

In 2007 I developed Chronic fatigue syndrome (M.E for those who werent sure) and was gradually phased out of my work and routine, until eventually in december '09 i was medically discharged. Due to my condition, my physical training basically stopped and i put on a lot of weight. At my peak Ihit 107 kg.

But life goes on and bills need to be paid so i started to work again as an engineering technician in the private sector. And whilst everyone i work with are in the 55-65 age range and there are literally no women there, i figured it was time to get back in shape, as looking at pictures of me from last summer make me shudder. Also I had done in the past some very part time modelling, and recently some photographers have asked if i wanted to do some work for them.

So i got myself a Dumbell bench, exercise mat, some dumbells, a couple of supplements and dramatically changed my diet.

My workout week is saturday to wednesday, with thursday and friday as rest days. (I work quite long days and so my weekday workouts arent as intense as i would like so I use my weekends to blast myself)

Firstly I'll go over my new diet.

At 05:30 i have a protein shake.

at 09:00 1.5 rounds of tuna, light mayo and green salad sandwhiches in wholemeal bread.

at 12:00 same as 09:00

at 17:30 couple of pieces of wholemeal toast with marmite

and finally at 19:30 small portion of steamed vegetables. (brocolli, carrot, sweetcorn and cauliflower)

each meal is accompanied with an Amino Acid pill.

I drink on average about 4.5 litres of water a day.

On one of my rest days i will have a little treat such as pizza to replace the steamed veg, or maybe a packet of crisps with my lunchtime meal. Just something to A) keep my happy, and B) stop my body getting too used to a very low fat diet and going into Famine mode.

On workout days i will generally do a quick warmup and a few sets of dumbells on one of my upper body groups, first thing in the morning, before my protein shake. And then in the evening, I'll do a few more sets, and an Ab workout to Pierre's intermediate Abs workout.

I am seeing the weight come off slowly, in the last two weeks i've shed just below 2kg, which is fine. My weight this morning was 102.1 kg. I always weight myself first thing in the morning before i drink any water or protein shakes,

Up until now I have avoided posting on any fitness website or forum because (without wanting to invoke the wrath of the forumite gods) they tend to be prowled by trolls, and the quirky thing about workouts and fitness is, that everyone has their own routine, diet and opinion, and everyone thinks theirs is the best one, which usually means a lot of flame.

I guess what i'm hoping for is some feedback. Is just under 1kg a week about right? am i drinking enough or too much water?

Before anyone says it, I know i need to do more cardio, and as my level of fitness increases I will start doing more, I just want to make sure that I am up to a certain standard before i start putting on my stretchy pants and wheezing my way up and down the promenade :)

Look forward to hearing your thoughts

Hi Anna, Thanks very much for the comments. I will take on board what you said about the water, as even though i feel a lot more alert now that i am taking in so much , i also tend to visit the loo quite a bit. The rigid diet is ok, as being ex Navy i am quite used to rigidity and in some ways i prefer the strictness of my diet as it is something less to worry about. I do usually add a "Go Ahead" orange and sultana biscuit thingy to one of my meals just to keep my sweet tooth in check. I am glad that my weight loss is about right, Although i also know that the more i lose, the harder i will have to work to get rid of more, and once i get down to maybe 95k i will start upping the weights to start rebuilding my muscles. The main reason that i take a protein shake instead of another meal, other then it being quicker to prepare first thing in the morning, is that i feel i'd rather have too much protein in my diet then too little. I do tend to blast my muscles pretty hard when i am doing weights or abs, and i dont want to reach the stage where i start eating my own muscles and have nothing to replace them with. I have no doubt that i am being perhaps a little too over cautious. Also i kind of like the way it tastes hehe. Ill give the lifestyle stuff a look and see if it give me any more hints. Your advice is greatly appreciated and if any further things pop into mind, i am always very happy to hear them. Matt

Hey Matt, I read this with great interest and some thoughts that you might want to consider. I think 1kg a week weight loss is just about right. If you're thirsty drink until you're not, you don't have to drink excessive amounts of water. Yes you're right about the cardio training but remember the intensity can be low to start. If it were me i'd rather replace the calories in the protein drink with another meal. The diet does seem very rigid, with little variety and i wonder if that will make it hard to stick to in the long term. Have a look under Lifestyles and Vanessa has some good nutritional ideas and tips. Good luck. Anna
